Architecture
Designed by Alexander Jackson Davis and completed in 1846, Blandwood is America’s oldest Italianate style building. The Italianate style reached its height of popularity between 1855 and 1870.
Blandwood’s interior features elaborate plasterwork, marble mantels, and numerous examples of decorative faux-finishes. Pocket windows and shutters are found throughout the 1846 section of the house, and large pocket doors open into the bays in the twin parlors.
The rear section of Blandwood is an older, federal style farmhouse built in 1795 and expanded in 1822.
The interior of the older section features carved Federal style mantels, 9-over-6 windows, and paneled wainscoting.
